I second Ben Long's suggestions about film and acting classes. A thorough understanding of the theory behind performing (and if you can actually act in a production, even better!) is so, so important for magic. Magic, after all, is presenting a magical element of theatre.

It really depends on how you're presenting the effect and so on - anything from flourishy one card productions to a mind-reading revelation could suit your style.

T11 has a thing called SNCs - Saturday Night Contests, weekly contests which sometimes involve magic video submissions. Other times they can be completely different things. And yeah, they usually give out prizes.

My first instinct would be to just go with some simple patter about mind reading, and away from any sort of meaningful story. It depends on the effect's method really - the effect may require the patter to keep that general idea too.

Any version of the Bank Nite effect would play pretty well - or other mentalism stuff, really. The one I prefer is Bryn Reynold's Your Lucky Nite from the book The Safwan Papers.
