    The Spring

Hey Matt, You're right - a spring should have the middle arched upwards rather than downwards. If you then release the cards with the right amount of pressure, the cards should spring out. I think it's just a matter of time, really, if you play around with it a little - just like fans and...

    Hecklers

The post above is pretty much an example of how not to deal with hecklers. Needless to say, there have been a LOT of posts about hecklers on T11, and very few good ones. Why is the post above bad? Situation one. They guess your method every two seconds. You keep telling them they're wrong...

Bingo. The first useful response in this thread.

    Ultra Smoke vs The Gecko

No, you can take it off - it just takes a while. It's a hassle, and especially if you can't use it properly (or don't know when to use it properly, which is the single most important thing about US2k), then it's definitely not worth it. From this opinion, I would recommend the other for our post...

    Best Triumphant...

I have to say first of all, I just simply don't like people coming out and wanting "the best" all the time - because guess what - these shortcuts don't get you the best. In all honestly, looking for the shortcut by asking for "best of" effects isn't gonna do you any favours, and 95% of the time...

Advancing Your Magic - Unrelated Products

I second Ben Long's suggestions about film and acting classes. A thorough understanding of the theory behind performing (and if you can actually act in a production, even better!) is so, so important for magic. Magic, after all, is presenting a magical element of theatre.

    Revealing a Selected Card

It really depends on how you're presenting the effect and so on - anything from flourishy one card productions to a mind-reading revelation could suit your style.

"A Deck of Cards" by Daniel Madison?

There's information in other threads if you use the search feature, it's pretty recent..

    Double Backed card tricks

The search bar is a brilliant trick, and highly underutilised.

    Online Magic Competition

T11 has a thing called SNCs - Saturday Night Contests, weekly contests which sometimes involve magic video submissions. Other times they can be completely different things. And yeah, they usually give out prizes.

    Looking for sleights

For the latter, Garcia Reversal (David Misner's Inversion Theory pdf has it) might work.. Nothing's coming to me about the first one at the moment though, sorry I'm not more help. Will let you know if I think of anything..

    Uses for the Second Deal

You could build so many routines from this - if you look at Jack Parker's effects, I often think to myself "How the heck did he think of using these effects in this order to create this effect?" I suspect the same will be true of the SSD.

    Ultra Smoke vs The Gecko

From the questions you have asked, I would immediately and unreservedly recommend The Gecko for you.. It appears that you have completely overlooked the point of UltraSmoke, and it sounds like you have the wrong mindset for it. UltraSmoke is not about tricks. UltraSmoke is about enhancing the...

    Looks sweet

My first instinct would be to just go with some simple patter about mind reading, and away from any sort of meaningful story. It depends on the effect's method really - the effect may require the patter to keep that general idea too.

    Good stage effects?

Any version of the Bank Nite effect would play pretty well - or other mentalism stuff, really. The one I prefer is Bryn Reynold's Your Lucky Nite from the book The Safwan Papers.

    How long does it take...

Some don't get up - some takes weeks, and a month +. Others are much quicker. Depends how busy they are.

    Breaking the Barrier

Hey man.. First off: YES, there are some people, who, for varying reasons, will not budge at magic. Usually, YES, it is also possible to impress them - there are many stories of people impressing others who normally don't budge at anything. However, for the most part, it's enough to know that...

    Hard Hitting? Completely impromptu?

Basically, I believe so. Don't get me wrong - some tricks are by nature stronger than others. Some tricks by nature will suit you better than others. Some tricks will suit certain spectators more than others. Take something like Lady Bug by Paul Harris - creating life out of blood, the very...

    Magic is an Art

Incidentally, I wanted to draw reference to the fact that magic/flourishing as an art is a highly contested debate. This obviously is not the place, and I don't want to turn it into such - but it bears relevance, so I thought I'd reference it. As far as art goes - I like photography, I sing and...

    Wish List

Well, whilst I sympathise with what you're saying Randomwrath - it's very, very true, and a good thing to keep in mind - wanting a lot is different from working on a lot :) I'd give King the benefit of the doubt - however you are absolutely right, about practicing, and especially about hype. I...
