Hi everyone, today my teacher asked me to perform a 10-15 minute magic show in front of two classes this coming friday since it's almost the end of school. I'm thinking of putting together a routine but keep in mind that I'll be 3/4 surrounded and some students will be sitting on the floor.
The problem is that i know what effects that I'm going to do but not sure of a perfect patter for transition between the non card and card effects and between the two card effects. I'm going to be starting off with 5 and 1 transpo + Crazy man's handcuffs with a pickpocketing theme for patter and ends with shuffle bored and anniversary waltz. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you already know what you want to do. Not sure what kind of help you could use from us/me.

He wants patter help linking the effects together.

I'm not super familliar with shuffle board/bored. You could use a table if you're worried about angle problems. It would force people to stand or sit in seats rather than under your performance.

4 tricks for a 10-15 minute show? Eesh. That's not a lot of time, especially with something like shuffleboard. Have you timed yourself with patter? Well, I guess that's the problem, huh.

It's difficult for us to suggest patter for you. What works for me most assuredly would not work for you. The two of us talk differently, we use different patterns, different styles and different vocabulary.

But more importantly, we have nothing to go by because you have no theme. Coincidentally (or not), that's why you're having trouble coming up with patter between effects. Your performance, and the effects that make up your performance, have no theme. Your performance comes across as a dealer demo - displaying all the different tricks you can do - without giving it meaning or a common thread.

If you can link your performance together with a theme, then the patter will practically write itself.

The best idea would be to choose a general theme and display the effects around that I personally use the presentational angle of perception (and how it can be manipulated) when ever i perform magic (not very often nowdays).

I using your effects i would start with the 5 and 1 transpo framed as a simple game turned into a perception manipulation exercise.

Explain with one or two specs next to you that CMH is the same concept (the displacement of two objects) just done openly

The Waltz to seriously destroy their believe on perception

Shufflebored as a prediction loosely based on the the idea when you can control perception you can inturn control actions.

It seems like you've already got your routine together. So, let's talk about how you're gonna perform.

Make sure you don't just stand in front of the class, make sure everyone can get out of they're seats and have a good view. Try standing against a wall if you don't want anyone behind you, which you probably don't. Remember that there are more spectators than just girls in your class, even though they may give better reactions, you don't want to seem like a total whore. Perform for some guys and MAKE SURE you perform for your teacher. After all, they're the one who let you perform in class.

So here's my basic routine:
Talk about how I used to have an interest in pickpocketing and how I will teach them how pickpockets are able to do their job without anyone noticing and start off with 5 and 1 transpo.
Tell them how after I lost interest in pickpocketing, I learned about Houdini and how his ability to escape captivates me, then I do CMH.
Then I do shufflebored by simon aronson, telling them how I was able to influence someone's actions as a result of watching Houdini because he knows how to captivate an audience.
Then I end with anniverary waltz, telling a boy and a girl to help me and show them how every action and emotion are able to bring two people close together.
What do you think about this routining? Does anyone think it's too confusing?

Tell me something... Pursuant to what we said above - what is the theme of your performance? Describe it in one sentence (and no 20-clause sentences :p)... I have an idea of what it could be based on what you've described, but what do you think it is?

@praetoritevong: The theme for my performance is the behavior of people's ego.
By the way, today's performance went great, thank you all for all of the advices! I performed for about 80 people and I asked 3 girls and 2 guys to help me, don't worry Aaron! I feel very accomplished today.

Nice! You should feel accomplished! As long as the audience enjoyed it, you were a success. :)
