Needles and Thread

Hi Guys,

Hope your all doing well .

Turns out for the 2010 Fringe (In Feb/March) a few local magicians have booked out a large venue and will be putting on a combined show. Its basically a Magic Variety Show, which will last around 90 Minutes called 'My Sinystrs House of Strange'

I am putting together an act (Around 15 - 20 Minutes) and want to base it around Geek Magic, mainly effects using Needles and/or Thread.

Currently I am looking at:

Opening with Gypsy Thread
The same thread will then be used for 'Saw'
Which will then be used for 'Thread'
I am then looking at learning 'Through and Through' by Dan Hauss
Closing with a Swallowing of Razor Blades, and pulling them from my stomach.

How does this sound?

I do not currently have a method for the Razor Blades, and have yet to learn Through and Through, do you have any hints or ideas?

through and through wouldnt work very well for a large crowd, with the needle being sooo small.
maybe check out needle swallowing, its a little easier i feel. but, saw might be hard to do on stage also, with it being such a small area.
think about stage size too.
it seems like thread tricks are kind hard to do on stage, when people have to be able to see the thread. just my opinion

Where I am performing will be a fairly 'close stage' environment with at maximum 100 People, and they are in fairly close proximity.

I will have to look at the stage and work on my effects dependant on this.

Should be a great night.

Any who, if you do end up doing anything from mouth I would probably do Razor blades instead. They are bigger, a little scarier then needles, and can be pretty gory. Needles can be gory but seeing a massive amount of blood form needle pricks is a little less believable then from a cutter's best friend, That is just my opinion.

I would cut Through and Through. Not that it's a bad effect, it just doesn't fit. I'd cut either Saw or Thread too. It's going to be hard to tie all those effects together in a way that doesn't feel forced. Doing all five, I think, is just going to undercut the strength of each individual effect.

I think Gypsy Thread, Thread, and Needle or Razor Blade Swallowing would be a good set.

Bizarro has some good work on the razor blades on his DVD Helter Shelter. Lots of different methods and handlings.

Steve Spill's Confessions of a Needle Swallower is probably the best method/handling out there for needle swallowing.

Well there is that one effect that I suggested involving 52 hindu shuffles with sharp double edged razors but thats an effect for another day. Really I would work my way up to the blades. If you want to have this routine revolve around thread and all the strange things you can do with it.

I personally would perform Thread first then a gypsy thread using your mouth saying possibly something along the line that your tongue is very talented. You live in the UK I assume? Jokes about your talented tongue flies further then here (fill in the blanks on the jokes about your talented tongue.) If you are young and get that joke, its not my fault its your parents.

Anyway once you established that your tongue is talented, you could then go into the razor blades.
Now if you want people saying that the blade thing is a trick then do gypsy thread before, if you want to present it as a stunt. I suggest trashing gypsy and opting for string from neck ala Sean fields saw.

With that said you could also do saw with razor blades just make sure you dull your blades and keep them separated from the sharp, (speaking from very bloody experience)

I just realized your in Australia, so I will type faster for ya. anyway yeah I think jokes about talented tongues will be a little more exceptable. (But I do not know I have never been)
