Tips for a Birthday Performance

Hey T11 Comm,

I was asked to perform a 10 min show (give or take... not more than 15 mins though) with a birthday theme at a 90-year old's birthday party (with give or take 100 people... no stage I'm guessing...).

I was hoping to ask for some suggestions with what kind of routine I should perform considering my audience would be such (but you know... I'm guessing it's gonna be more of a family thing with his kids, nephews, nieces, grandkids etc.)

I do realize that of course the routine should be of my performing character, but if I could ask for suggestions on what would really hit on well in a birthday party would be real great.

At this point, I have 5 months for conceptualizing, practicing and perfecting. My only idea (and please feel free to yay or nay) is to end with Dresscode by Calen Morelli from whatever I was wearing throughout the show to a shirt saying HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and signed with all his grandkids' notes and such (which I will give to him at the end of the show)

Ideas & tips are much appreciated,
Yalubill

I gotta admit..that Dresscode idea is pretty awesome!! and very creative...and with a meaning...good job man!!

Nice Touch with the dress code. I'd open with something like Cereal Killer or McCombical Prediction, then go into Stan Kate and Edith, and finish with your Dresscode idea. All three effects are visual, funny, and should fill the time spot nicely. Figuring closer on the 15 min side than the 10 min one.

As Draven and Luis said, awesome idea on Dresscode and definitely plan on the 15 minutes. I'd try to squeeze 3-4 effects into that time frame. A good rope routine (fiber optics) always plays nicely for a large crowd of that size and you can make it as beginner-advanced as you want.

If it were me I would do a McCombical Deck Routine, Fiber Optics, 20th Century Silks, and end with Dresscode.

Thanks so much Rick, Luis & Draven

Will definitely look into those

Also, because you are performing for an elderly audience as well as younger people, make sure the tricks you use have props that can be easily seen by everyone. Also, make the effects simple so everyone can understand what is happening. The Dresscode idea works perfectly as it is quick, visual, and direct, and leaves him with something to remember.

As long as you have these things in mind, like Rick said, 3-4 effects should fill that 15 minutes up perfectly. Good luck with the gig!
