Just never get caught without a deck of cards!!!! You should have a deck on you all the time! They are also good backup if you run out of toilet paper while on the road. 
That said, if you really dont have any gear on you yeah well as already mentioned i might do a good old balducci or use the opportunity to test (and probably fail) my muscle reading ability.

Well, speaking for myself, i've recently just started looking into coins and loops. Cards have just always been a strong intrest of mine.

Cards have always been my strong interest aswell, I've recently started branching out though with Rope & Sponge Balls.
I just came up with this effect where I take a flower seed and some soil,cup my hands together around it,and a small flower begins to extend out through a small opening..

I always carry my bag with me, but sometimes i would forget my cards. One of the things i would do (which i learnt from Wayne's daily update) is asking them to choose a number between one and ten. Then i would tell them it would be a certain number.
Or i would go onto Psychological card forces, without cards.
Or i would do that "torn and restored thumb" thing (nice name eh?)
Or say "Sorry man, enough stories, i gotta go.".
Yeah and its sad that a tennis player is nothing without his racket right?
Well seriously cards and coins are the most versatile easy to carry props i`d say so why skip them?
Not to say that your effect doesnt sound interesting at all.
Screw that. I'd prefer to spend my pocket space on useful things.

Don't write analogies if you don't know how to use them. Jesus...
Any pendulum effect can be done at any time because what is a pendulum but a suspended weight. Hypothetically, a small iPod suspended by the headphone cord could suffice. I would at least try to make the effect organic at least by giving some relevance to the iPod.

Mind reading (depending on the materials will depend on the trick)
If I have pen/paper (or business card) I can do a prediction effect, nothing at all I've recently been practicing my cold reading for fun, it's enjoyable but not something I plan on using extensively.
Key bend (if someone has a key they can afford to be bent)
Psychokinetic time if there is a watch handy.
psh. I don't know, is that enough?
I would also preform many of these if I had a deck of cards and was asked to do something.

At least put a little effort in trying to understand what I am saying. And the analogie works very well if we would say magic=sport and cardistry=tennis for example. But yeah I know just criticizing is more fun.
My point was simply that lots of people specialise in cards or coins or whatever and there is simply nothing wrong with that.
If you were to say that people should lift there head from that every now and than and take a look around to see what else is out there, I definitely agree with you but still I there is nothing wrong with specialising in something.
