What is real magic?

What is it to you guys?

Is it something that your spectators can see?
Touch?
Hear?
Feel?

Is it a simple card trick that has been perfected by the artist
Ex:The Invisible Deck

Or a more elegant one with more twists and turns?
Ex:dream of Aces

Share your thoughts and rants
Whatever you think is the best type of tricks put it here

In short, how should your spectators experience the magic?

real magic is when a granny waves a wand and a pumpkin turns into a carriage.
but it is also when you show the audience something without any possible explanation

All the sleights and gaffs and gizmos mean nothing to spectators.Once they think they know how the effect is done, the magic disappears.True magic is that feeling you got when saw that performance that made you believe. That is what you are trying to convey to your spectators. What Micheal Ammar calls,Making Magic memorable. You may be doing some great flourishes, teriffic tricks. But when your gone, does the magic linger behind.Do they think about you or the magic?

Real magic, is whatever the spectators decide what is real magic, because their perceptions judgments and considerations are the only ones which are important when analysing the effect of magic.

real magic is the relationship between the magician, and the spectator.

Magic isnt something you can feel or touch, it's the moment in time when the spectator sees something that is impossible.

Real Magic is magic done with a small gaff usually concealed in the sleeve or lapel that has a length of wire, usually invisable that pulls an object from view quickly.

[/sarcasm]

Real magic is when the spectator is left with no outs. They just simply beleive that you did the impossible.

ewww, i like that

Real magic is sleeping in on a sunday, enjoying the sunset, or buying that new album you've been wanting.

Corny enough?
In that case, real magic is knowing you've made someone's day better by bringing magic into their world.

You little stalker!
Real magic is being able to snap your fingers and make 50 tons of gold appear.

Real magic is being able to fly from china to california in 2 seconds

Real magic is visibly taking your head off and playing a game of blowing with it, then putting it back on with no harm done.

Real magic would be invisibly punching a person with just a snap of your fingers.

Real magic is levitating an object all the way across a room.

Real magic is letting a person think of a card and saying the name of that card the moment they think of it.

Real magic is snapping your fingers and instantly have a 4 year college education in your head.

Come one guys, real magic isn't tricks. Real magic has no explanation. If you could do real magic you would throw away all your props and start poofing up gold in your bedroom. If we could do real magic our lives would be the best.

Magic is much more than cards and coins and sponge balls. It happens to everybody on a daily basis. There are so many ways that you could describe real magic but I'll list some examples.

Meeting a friend you haven't seen in years.
Surviving a car crash.
Making a cancer patient smile.
Helping someone younger than you.
A Sunny Day.
A rainbow.
Survivors of a natural disaster.
Learning something new.
Teaching others.
Helping an elderly person have a good day.
Bringing joy to a nursing home.
Meeting someone new for the first time.
Your first kiss.
Nature
The planet.
Every human being alive.

Everything above is an example of real magic. Isn't it magic alone that this planet just happens to be the only one with life on it? Isn't it magic when you help a terminally ill person get through the day and have a good time in the process?

Try this... Next time you have a minute. Go out into the woods. Go deep in so you can't see any buildings or cars or anything like thaT. THEN, ONCE YOU ARE THERE JUST SIT DOWN AND LISTEN. lISTEN TO NATURE, SMELL THE FRESH AIR, AND JUST LOOK AROUN... that's real magic.

I am constantly amused by the amount of "fluff" answers found in threads like this. This question sees more action than a porn star, with about as much intelligence behind it. It reminds me of the obtuse thinking behind, "Are we artists".

So a few schools of thought:

First school - we don't do "real magic" as "real magic" is Peter Pan flying or actually having "REAL" super powers. Great...that was real magic for me when I was 5 yrs old. I have grown up since then, and see "real magic" as something different; however, I do understand that line of thinking.

Second school...or as I like to call it - Special Ed School of unThought - I think this topic gets so many answers because of the personalized view of "real magic" or even "Magic" defined. I once asked people to define magic as entry into a group - some of the best answers I got - What I use to pay my rent - A craft I like to share with people - but all the "fluff" answers made me want to barf. "It is like when we all feel childlike in a land of unicorns and butterflys" - give me a break - your words have no meaning.

Third school of thought - "Real magic" occurs when someone witnesses something that has no explanation. They fully understand the procedure (card was selected at random, lost in a deck, vanishes from deck, appears in their pocket), yet have no idea on the final outcome versus the initial situations. This has been mentioned above - and I personally believe is the concept of GOOD magic, or STRONG magic...however, "Real magic" - I don't know.

So these are the main thoughts that occur again and again with some outside the box thinking/variance.

Here is the thing - Real and Magic - are contridicting terms at any level, at least in our world. So, really - we are trying to defind an oxymoron - not that easy.

real
1. true.
2. existing or occurring as fact; actual rather than imaginary, ideal, or fictitious
3. being an actual thing; having objective existence; not imaginary
4. genuine; not counterfeit, artificial, or imitation; authentic

magic
1. the art of producing illusions as entertainment by the use of sleight of hand, deceptive devices, etc

So to rephrase - Truthfully being deceptive - you see the reason it is hard to define.

Anyhow - if I personally had to make our own "Magic edition" definiton - I would say some of the things that people above have said:

Real magic is when the spectator is given no outs, you have connected with them, and left magic something they think and talk about for years to come - leaving the idea of magic, better than you found it upon your initial meeting. Real magic inspires thought.

There...I left my fluff behind too. Cheers.
